There is a version of this story where TOM had one energy drink, felt alert, and went about his day. That version doesn't have a chapter. The version with a chapter is the one where TOM had three energy drinks in ten minutes, in the belief that the effects would be additive in a positive direction. He was right about additive. He was wrong about positive. He is now vibrating slightly and reporting synesthetic experiences.
Chapter 31 covers caffeine overconsumption β specifically the kind that happens when someone treats an energy drink like a soft drink and multiplies accordingly. The response is calmer and simpler than TOM's current state, which is the point.

TOM drank 3 energy drinks in 10 minutes. He is now sweating, visibly jittery, and has reported that he can hear colours. He is not calm. He is also not tired, which was the original goal. What should you do?
A)Get him to sit, sip water, and chill
Sit him down, give him water, keep him calm, and let the caffeine process through his system. Too much caffeine can affect the heart. Rest and hydration are the correct response.
B)Challenge him to a dance-off
He danced so hard he launched his shoe out the window. Vigorous exercise when already jittery and heart-rate elevated is counterproductive. TOM needs less stimulation, not more. 0 points.
C) Give him more caffeine to balance it out
More caffeine?! He just phased into another dimension. This is the helium logic applied to stimulants. More of the cause is not the cure. 0 points.
D)Record a TikTok and call it "Science"
"Science" experiment? He short-circuited mid-TikTok. TOM needs calm and water, not an audience and a platform. 0 points.
Option A is correct. The body processes caffeine over time β roughly half of it leaves the system every 5β6 hours β and there is no intervention that speeds this up meaningfully. What helps is creating the conditions for the body to manage it without additional strain: sitting still (reduces heart rate), drinking water (caffeine is a mild diuretic and dehydration worsens symptoms), and staying calm (anxiety amplifies caffeine's stimulant effects significantly). What doesn't help is dancing, more caffeine, or an audience.

TOM's tip β energy isn't always the answer β is one of those statements that works as a pun and also as actual advice. The instinct behind three energy drinks in ten minutes is recognisable: TOM wanted to feel more alert, and if one works, three seemed likely to work three times as well. This is not how stimulants work.
