The Tinfoil Hat Theory

TOM heard that microwaves control thoughts, so he made a tinfoil hat. Now he's overheating — literally. Chapter 32 covers heat safety, the physics of foil, and why more layers is never the answer.

TOM's relationship with the electromagnetic spectrum is complicated. Having heard that microwave radiation could interfere with brain function, he took the logical next step of fashioning a protective headpiece from kitchen foil. The foil, he reasoned, would block whatever signal was being beamed at his thoughts. The foil did not block the signal. The foil did, however, conduct heat very efficiently. TOM is now wearing what is functionally a small outdoor oven on his head, in summer, and is very warm indeed.

Chapter 32 is one of those chapters that is funny right up until it becomes a genuine heat safety lesson. Overheating is a real risk, TOM's symptoms are real symptoms, and the correct response is straightforward — once the hat comes off.

📖 Chapter 32 — The Scenario

TOM made a tinfoil hat to protect against microwave mind control. He has been wearing it outside. He is now flushed, sweating heavily, and confused — the last symptom being either heat-related or a pre-existing condition, it's genuinely hard to tell. What should you do?

A) Take off the foil and cool him down

Remove the heat-trapping hat immediately and move him somewhere cool. Tinfoil holds heat in — not helpful in summer. Or any season, really.

B)Spray him with ketchup

Ketchup? Now he's toasty and saucy. The ketchup is cold, briefly, but does not address the heat trapped by the foil or remove the hat. TOM smells of tomatoes. 0 points.

C)Add more foil for extra protection

More foil = more overheating. He is now a baked potato. Additional layers increase thermal mass and trap more heat. TOM's temperature continues to rise. 0 points.

D)Install a fan in the hat

The fan in the hat shorted and caught fire. An electrical component inside a tinfoil hat worn by a sweating person is a problem on multiple levels. 0 points.

Option A is correct — and the logic is simple once you know what tinfoil actually does. Aluminium foil is an excellent thermal conductor and reflector. In an oven it traps heat around food. On a head in summer, it does exactly the same thing: absorbs radiant heat from the sun, traps the body's own heat beneath it, and creates a warm, sealed environment very close to the part of the body most sensitive to overheating. TOM has, in attempting to protect his brain, created optimal conditions for heat exhaustion.

💡 The Core Rule

Overheating: remove whatever is trapping heat, move to a cool environment, loosen clothing, give cool water to sip, apply cool damp cloths to neck and wrists. If someone is confused, stops sweating despite the heat, or loses consciousness — call 999. That's heatstroke, not heat exhaustion, and it's a medical emergency.

The Potato Experiment

Wrap a potato in foil and leave it in direct sunlight for a few minutes. Carefully touch the outside — it heats up fast. Now imagine that on TOM's head.

This is why tinfoil hats are a bad idea in summer: aluminium is one of the best conductors of heat available in any kitchen. It's excellent at moving heat from the environment into whatever it's wrapped around. For leftovers in the fridge, this keeps them at a stable temperature. For a head in a heatwave, it creates a small personal sauna with no exit.

The lesson from the potato isn't just about tinfoil hats — it's about anything dark or metallic worn on the head in strong sun. Black hats, metal hairbands, and similarly conductive or absorptive materials all create the same effect at a smaller scale.

Heat exhaustion vs heatstroke — knowing the difference

TOM's current condition — flushed, sweating heavily, confused — sits at the heat exhaustion end of the spectrum. Understanding where that spectrum ends and heatstroke begins is genuinely important, because the two have different responses.

  • Flushed, cool, pale or moist skin

  • Fast but weak pulse

  • Nausea, dizziness, headache

  • Muscle cramps

  • Hot, dry skin — stopped sweating

  • Rapid, strong pulse

  • Loss of consciousness

The correct response to overheating — step by step

  1. Remove whatever is trapping heat — immediately

    The tinfoil hat, in TOM's case. But the same applies to excess clothing, dark headwear, or anything insulating. The first step is stopping the heat accumulation.

  2. Move to somewhere cool — shade or indoors

    Get out of the sun. If indoors isn't possible, deep shade is much better than direct sunlight. A cool building with air conditioning is ideal.

  3. Loosen or remove excess clothing

    Clothing traps heat against the body. Loosening it allows the body's own cooling system (sweating) to work more effectively.

  4. Apply cool damp cloths to neck, wrists, and armpits

    These areas have major blood vessels close to the surface — cooling them cools the blood, which carries the cooling effect to the rest of the body quickly.

  5. Give cool water to sip steadily

    Rehydration supports the body's cooling function. Sip steadily rather than gulping large quantities quickly. Sports drinks can help replace lost salts if sweating has been significant.

🇬🇧 UK Context — Heat Safety

  • Call 999 for heatstroke — confusion, stopped sweating despite heat, very high temperature, or loss of consciousness. This is a medical emergency.

  • Call NHS 111 if heat exhaustion symptoms don't improve after 30 minutes of cooling measures, or if you're unsure which category someone falls into

  • The UK Health Security Agency issues heat health alerts during hot weather — checking these helps anticipate risk days, particularly for children, elderly people, and those with health conditions

  • Never leave children or pets in parked cars in warm weather — temperatures inside a car can rise dramatically within minutes even in mild UK sunshine

  • Tinfoil is not recommended headwear under any circumstances recognised by NHS guidelines

The broader lesson from Chapter 32

Chapter 32 is ostensibly about a tinfoil hat, but it's really about two things. First, the physics of heat: aluminium foil conducts and traps heat, which is why it works so well in cooking and so badly as outdoor headwear. Second, the importance of recognising heat exhaustion early and responding correctly — before the person stops sweating and the situation becomes heatstroke.

The chapter's gentler point is about misinformation — TOM made the hat because he'd heard something alarming that wasn't true, and the "solution" caused a real problem that didn't need to exist. The remedy for microwave mind control (not a thing) turned out to be an overheating hazard (very much a thing). The book doesn't belabour this, but it's there: acting on bad information can have real consequences even when the original concern was imaginary.

🚨 Heatstroke Is a 999 Call

If someone in the heat is confused, has stopped sweating, has a very high temperature or a throbbing headache, or loses consciousness — call 999 immediately. While waiting: move to cool shade, apply cool water to skin, fan them, and do not give water to an unconscious person. Heatstroke can be fatal without prompt medical treatment.
